For nearly two millennium, the ballista has been a technology used in warfare to send projectiles over great distances with pinpoint accuracy.
The development of the ballista is credited to Greek engineer Philo of Byzantium with the name deriving from the ancient Greek verb ballien, meaning ‘to throw’. Over time it changed into ballistes, meaning ‘thrower’, and eventually into ballista.
The ballista was developed from two different weapons, a hand-held crossbow, and a mounted crossbow with a stock and a trigger. However, these weapons relied on tension, and less energy could be transferred to the projectiles, limiting the range of the weapon.
With the invention of the torsion spring came the first ballista and the ability to fire with an immense force over vast distances. The first versions of the ballista were made of wood and had to be assembled on the battlefield.
While the ancient Greeks were the first to use the ballista, the Romans extensively adopted and adapting it, perfecting it in the process. The ballista was used during the end of the Roman Republic and remained prominent all throughout the ancient and mediaeval ages. However, by the middle ages gunpowder-based weapons such as cannons began to dominate, offering much greater firepower and range, rendering siege engines such as the ballista obsolete.
The ballista crossbow was both a remarkable feat of ancient engineering, and a brutal weapon of destruction. Its presence across the world shaped the strategies and outcomes of many historical conflicts. Even as the ballista became less prevalent in battle due to the advancement of gunpowder weaponry, the legacy of this siege engine remained to highlight a period when mechanical engineering was crucial on the battlefield.
